Using a Arboretum and a Logger you will generate quite a surplus of saplings. You can use those to produce a new kind of fuel to power Biogas Engines, namely Biomass. The Fermenter needs to be supplied with plant material, Fertilizer or Compost (1.1.2+) and water. Like all machines it needs to be powered by an engine as well. The resulting Biomass can be extracted using Waterproof Wooden Pipes or alternatively put an empty bucket in the extra slot on the right hand side in the Fermenter's GUI.

It needs to be powered by a BuildCraft compatible engine.

Plant material includes Saplings, Rubbertree Saplings, Wheat, Mushrooms, Cacti, and Sugar Cane.

Biomass produced per item fermented (in buckets):

Saplings 0.8
Wheat 0.1
Cactus 0.2
Sugar Cane 0.2
Mushroom 0.2
Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 0.8
Compressed Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 0.9

Number of items processed by a single Fertilizer or Compost:

Saplings 10
Wheat 100
Cactus 50
Sugar Cane 50
Mushroom 50
Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 25
Compressed Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 22

Number of items processed by a single bucket of water (roughly):

Saplings 1.2
Wheat 9
Cactus 4.5
Sugar Cane 4.5
Mushroom 4.5
Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 2.25
Compressed Plantball (IC2, 1.3+) 2

Fermenter GUI

The fermenter currently accepts saplings, Rubber Tree Saplings, Cacti, and Sugar Cane for fermentation. Supply these here.

  • II. Fuel Slot:

It also needs "fuel" in the form of Fertilizer or Compost. Compost will ferment a tiny amount less than Fertilizer per work cycle, but will last a bit longer.

  • III. Water Tank:

Fermentation requires a fair amount of water that needs to be supplied either via BuildCraft Pipes or via Water Cans from the input slot.

  • IV. Product Tank:

Produced Biomass will be deposited into this tank. Operation will stop when the tank is full.

  • V. Manual Input/Output Slot:

For ease of use this slot allows transfering liquids in and out of the Fermenter by hand using Cans. If Water Cans or IC2 Water Cells are put into this slot, the Fermenter will consume them to fill its water tank if there is space. Vice versa, if the can slot contains Empty Cans, the Fermenter will try to fill them with Biomass, creating Biomass Cans and put them into this slot if it is unoccupied.

  1. VI. Can Slot:

Converting Biomass stored in the product tank to portable Biomass Cans requires Empty Cans. These need to be put into this slot. If the input/output slot is not occupied, Biomass from the tank will be filled into the Cans and put into that slot.
